OPEN LETTER TO THE UNESCO DIRECTOR GENERAL

Excellency Mr. Koichiro Matsurra,

SOCEPP is addressing this protest letter to Your Excellency because UNESCO continues to have as its chairman for human rights and democracy none other than the notorious human rights violator Professor Endrias Eshete of Ethiopia.

The professor is well known for working closely with the repressive regime of Meles Zenawi and he is directly responsible for the savage repression unleashed against university students of Addis Ababa. It is no accident that he is protected by four bodyguard supplied to him by the Meles Zenawi regime. In Ethiopia, when we talk of democracy and human rights Endrias Eshete appears in the rank of violators along with his close friend and boss Meles Zenawi. He first distinguished himself back in 1991 when he publicly defended the brutal and inhuman expulsion of Ethiopians from Eritrea as "humane and just". Over the years he has loyally defended the Meles regime which was and is condemned worldwide as a cruel human rights violator.

It is unbecoming for such a person to be the UNESCO chairman for human rights and democracy in Ethiopia. It is time the UNESCP disassociates itself from this person and the repressive regime that he is serving.
