"DISAPPEARED" EDU LEADERS STILL UNACCOUNTED FOR

Sudanese security agents detained a number of leaders of the Ethiopian Democratic Union (an opposition organization in the period of the Derg/Mengistu) who were reportedly handed over to the Tigrean People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which is now in power in Ethiopia, and all have "disappeared" since relatives and kin have been trying to have any news of their whereabouts or condition without any success up to now.

The "didsappeared" are the following:

Abeje Feleke: arrested by Sudanese security agent Osman Gasim at Bahr Sindus on November 18/1989;

Fente Aragaw: arrested by Sudanese security agent Adem Abu Salha at Doka on November 17/1989;

Getachew Yirga arrested at the Umrakuba refiugee camp by Sudanese security agents Abdel Majid and Wad al Beshir—November 12/1989;

Meketaw: same day as above,same place and by the same security agents;

Asrade Beyene : arrested at Doka by the above mentioned security agents on November 13/1989;

Destaw Mekuanint: arrested at bahr Sindus on November 14/1989 by security agent Osman Gassim.

There have been unconfirmed reports that the TPLF has executed the above political prisoners.The EDU and the TPLF had fought several times and the TPLF is on record on wanting to "liquidate the EDU once and for all".

SOCEPP calls on international human rights organizations to support its demand for the immediate and unconditional reporting by the TPLF/EPRDF on the whereabouts of the above who were handed to it by the Sudan.
